Letters of Recommendation

If you’re planning to apply for graduate school, it’s important to think ahead of time about who might write your letters of recommendation. If you want to ask your Rivet School College Coach, you should make a list of examples from projects that you've mastered explaining which skills you were using. You can also collect examples of things they may know about you that show you have the values and interests to be a good candidate for the type of school where you’re applying.

  • Project/skills example: In a data presentation project, I created a spreadsheet to present data in a user-friendly and visually appealing way
  • Experience/values example: In my current job, I counsel families and children with the type of compassion and drive to help others that are positive qualities of a social worker

Here’s a list of what to include in an email to your College Coach:

  1. Name of school
  2. Name of program
  3. Why you want to apply to the program (1-3 sentences)
  4. Why you think the program is a good fit for you (1-3 sentences)
  5. Skills/project examples (at least 3)
  6. Experience/values examples (at least 3)

The more details and examples you provide, the stronger the letter of recommendation will be.
